Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting) Use as it is for best results.
  • 1 tsp baking soda Mix with dry ingredients.
  • 1 tsp salt Enhances the flavors.
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional) Add directly to dry ingredients.
  • ½ tsp black pepper Mix into dry ingredients.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk Use directly from the container.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold & cubed Must be cubed for flakiness.

Add-ins

  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese Shred just before use.
  • ½ cup fresh chives, finely chopped Use fresh for best flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  • Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
  • Gently fold in the fresh chives.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix using a fork until the dough comes together.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape into a round loaf about 1-inch thick.

Baking

  • Place dough on a floured baking sheet. Cut a deep ‘X’ across the top.
  • Bake for 30-45 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze for up to 3 months, thaw overnight before reheating.
