Ingredients
  

For the Fish

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Salt For seasoning
  • 1 tsp Pepper For seasoning
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 cup Light beer Chilled for best results
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1.5 lbs Cod fillets Cut into portions
  • 1 tsp Salt For seasoning
  • 1 tsp Pepper For seasoning

For the Toppings

  • 3-4 cups Red and/or green cabbage Finely shredded
  • 2-3 medium Carrots Shredded
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tsp Hot sauce To taste
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tsp Salt For the sauce
  • 1/2 lime Lime juice For the sauce
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 lime Lime juice
  • 1 medium Minced jalapeño pepper Seeded
  • 1 tbsp Fresh cilantro Optional, chopped
  • 1 tsp Capers Minced
  • 1/4 tsp Ground cayenne pepper To taste
  • 1/2 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp Ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Dried dill weed
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil For frying
  • 12 small Tortillas Corn or flour
  • 1 lime Sliced limes For serving
  • 1 tsp Optional toppings Pickled red onions, diced jalapeños, corn, cotija cheese

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  • Slowly whisk in the chilled beer and egg until smooth.
  • Season the cod fillets with salt and pepper. Dip them in the batter and coat thoroughly.

Cooking

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Fry the battered fish in batches until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side. Drain on a paper towel.

Assembly

  • In another bowl, mix the shredded cabbage and carrots.
  • For the sauce, whisk together mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, hot sauce, honey, lime juice, and remaining salt.
  • Warm the tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave.
  • Assemble tacos by placing crispy fish on tortillas, adding cabbage mix, and drizzling with sauce. Top with jalapeño, cilantro, and capers if desired.

Notes

Enhance flavors by adding a touch of lime zest to the sauce. Customize your tacos with different fish or add shrimp for a twist. Consider serving with a side of black beans or rice for a complete meal.
