  • ½ tsp black pepper For seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder For seasoning
  • 1 tsp paprika For seasoning
  • 1 tbsp olive oil Optional marinade
  • 1 tsp lemon juice Optional marinade
  • 1 large bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup mushrooms, optional
  • 1-2 jalapeños or banana peppers, optional
  • 4 slices provolone or American cheese For melting on top
  • 4 pieces hoagie rolls For sandwich base
  • to taste mayonnaise, garlic aioli, hot sauce For spreading

Instructions

Preparation

  • Season the thinly sliced chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  • If using a marinade, combine olive oil and lemon juice, then toss chicken in it and let it sit for 15 minutes while prepping other ingredients.

Sauté the Vegetables

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add butter or oil. Once hot, toss in sliced onions and bell peppers (and mushrooms if using).
  • Cook for about 5-7 minutes until onions are soft and translucent.

Cook the Chicken

  • Push the veggies to one side of the skillet, then add the seasoned chicken to the other side.
  • Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink, stirring occasionally.

Melt the Cheese

  • Top cooked chicken and vegetables with cheese slices. Cover skillet with a lid and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted.

Prepare the Rolls

  • While cheese melts, slice the hoagie rolls and spread mayonnaise or garlic aioli on the insides.
  • Toast rolls in the skillet for a minute if desired.

Assemble the Sandwiches

  • Spoon the chicken and vegetable mixture onto the bottom half of each roll.
  • Top with jalapeños or banana peppers for extra kick if desired.

Serve Immediately

  • Place the top half of the roll on each sandwich and serve hot, optionally drizzling hot sauce over the top.

Notes

Enhance flavor with extra herbs and customize your cheesesteak with different cheeses or add bacon. Serve with pickles or coleslaw to balance richness.
